What is your English speaking level?

Last updated

Answer honestly about what you can do in English, and get an estimate of your CEFR level. It takes about two minutes, and it is a self-check, not a test.

Statement 1

I can say my name, where I am from and what I do.

What does each level mean for speaking?

In our own words, this is what each level usually looks like in conversation.

  • A1: Beginner

You can handle very short, familiar exchanges when the other person helps you.
  • A2: Elementary

You can manage routine situations and talk about your own life in simple sentences.
  • B1: Intermediate

You can keep going in most everyday situations and explain what you think in simple terms.
  • B2: Upper intermediate

You can take part in real discussions and argue a point without much strain.
  • C1: Advanced

You speak flexibly and fluently across most social, academic and work situations.
  • C2: Proficient

You handle almost any spoken situation with ease and fine control of meaning.

How do I move up a level?

Speak a little every day, out loud, and get specific feedback on what you said. Reading about English will not move your speaking level by itself.

Questions people ask

Is this an official English test?
No. It is a self-check: you judge what you can do, and it estimates a level. It gives no certificate and cannot replace a test that an employer or visa office accepts.
Do I need to sign up or give my email?
No. It runs in your browser, and your answers are not saved or sent anywhere.
What do A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2 mean?
They are the six levels of the CEFR, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, from A1 for beginners to C2 for very advanced users.
Does this check listen to me speak?
No. It only reads your answers. To be assessed on real speech, answer a question out loud in SpeakWisely and get feedback from your own words.
Which level do I need for a job or a visa?
It depends on the employer or the visa. For example, the UK Skilled Worker visa asks for at least B2. Always check the official requirement for your case.
