Privacy policy

Effective and last updated

In short:

  • Your recording is processed and then deleted. It is never stored — only your transcript and results are kept.
  • We keep your account details, transcripts and results so we can give you feedback and show your progress.
  • We never see your card or UPI details, and we never sell your data.
  • You can ask us to see, correct or delete your data at any time.

Who is responsible for your data?

SpeakWisely (“we”) runs speakwisely.in and decides how your personal data is used, as the data fiduciary under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. How to reach us is at the end of this page.

What do we collect?

  • Account details: your name and email address, and a securely hashed password. If you sign in with Google, we receive your name and email from Google instead of a password.
  • Your learning profile: the goal, level and first language you choose, and your settings.
  • What you say and write when you practise: the transcripts of your spoken answers, text you type (for example into the Sentence Builder or a role-play), and the feedback, scores, mistakes and progress we work out from them.
  • Your recordings, briefly: Your recording is processed and then deleted. It is never stored — only your transcript and results are kept. Recordings are held in memory only while they are transcribed, for at most 15 minutes, and never written to a database or a backup. In Rehearse, the audio stays in your browser unless you ask to see your words.
  • Plan and payment records: which plan you bought, when, the amount and the payment reference. Payments are handled by Cashfree; we never receive your card, UPI or bank details.
  • How the site is used: pages visited, the referring site and any campaign tags, counted with a random identifier stored in your browser. This counting uses no cookies, stores no IP address, is switched off when your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control, and is linked to your account once you sign in so we can see how people find us. We also use Google Analytics (see below).
  • Messages you send us, for example on WhatsApp or by email.

Why do we use it?

  • To run your account and the practice you ask for: this is the service itself.
  • To give you feedback, estimated bands and a record of your progress.
  • To process plans you buy, and to keep the records the law requires.
  • To answer your questions and fix problems.
  • To understand, in aggregate, which pages and features help people, so we can improve them.
  • To keep the service secure and prevent abuse.

Who else processes your data?

We use a small number of service providers, each only for its job:

  • AI model providers (Google’s Gemini API and/or OpenAI, depending on the feature) receive the text of your answers, and in some configurations the audio of an answer for transcription, to analyse your speaking and write feedback.
  • Our own servers run speech recognition and the voices you hear, where those are self-hosted.
  • Cashfree Payments processes payments.
  • Google, if you choose to sign in with Google, and Google Analytics, which uses cookies to measure visits.
  • WhatsApp (Meta), if you choose to message us there.
  • Our hosting provider, which stores the database our service runs on.

Some of these providers process data outside India. We do not sell your personal data or share it for advertising.

Do you use cookies?

Yes, a few. Sign-in cookies keep you logged in and are needed for the service to work. Google Analytics sets its own cookies to measure visits; you can block them in your browser or with Google’s opt-out add-on without affecting how SpeakWisely works.

How long do you keep it?

  • Recordings: deleted once transcribed, and never kept, as described above.
  • Your account, transcripts, results and progress: for as long as you have an account, so your history stays with you. Ask us to delete your account and we will erase them.
  • Payment records: for as long as tax and accounting law requires, even after an account is deleted.

What are your rights?

Under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, you can ask us to:

  • tell you what personal data we hold about you and how we use it;
  • correct or complete data that is wrong or out of date;
  • erase your data, including deleting your account;
  • withdraw consent you have given, for the future;
  • nominate someone to act for you if you are unable to;
  • resolve a complaint (grievance) about how we have handled your data.

Contact us using the details below. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may complain to the Data Protection Board of India.

Can children use SpeakWisely?

SpeakWisely is meant for adults. If you are under 18, please use it only with the permission and supervision of a parent or guardian. If you believe a child has given us personal data without that consent, contact us and we will delete it.

How do you protect it?

Data travels over encrypted connections, passwords are stored only as secure hashes, access to production systems is restricted, and recordings never reach a disk. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach ever affected your data, we would tell you and the authorities as the law requires.

Will this policy change?

If how we handle data changes, we will update this page and its date. For a significant change, we will tell signed-in users in the app first. See also our terms and conditions.
